Mobile homes/mobile home holidays in St Valery, Picardy
St Valery-sur-Somme lies on the coast at the mouth of the famous river Somme, and at the bottom of the Baie de Somme in Picardy, northern France. It is situated roughly 30 km north west of Abbeville and to the west of the battlefields of the Somme where some of the most dreadful battles took place in WW1.
The town of St Valery is a popular tourist destination these days, partly because of its medieval character and ramparts, Gothic church and long waterside promenade area, and in the last couple of decades it has become popular for camping and mobile home holidays.
The history of the town dates back to before the era of the Roman invasion when it was just a small settlement, well before the days of tourism.
This little town easily deserves the description of "beautiful" but if you are planning a holiday here you really do need a car because trains don't run from here any longer and buses are infrequent.
Things to do and places to see on your camping or mobile home holiday; Well, there is a nature reserve (ornithological) especially for any twitchers amongst you, and that is called the Hable d'Ault. It is roughly 10 or 12 KMs down the coast towards le Tréport. Some bird watchers we know could spend all their holidays there!
If you travel inland on the D40 road for about 14 KMs you will arrive in Abbeville, one of the larger towns in Picardy. Abbeville was much damaged in WW2 but there is still some history to be found there, and of course, the ancient church of Église St-Vulfran. Abbeville is also great for shopping and restaurants.
Further inland and an easy drive from Abbeville is Amiens, the capital of the Picardy region, a city which pre-dates the Roman era by a long way, and though the city suffered some bomb damage during WW2 (restored in 1956) there is still a great deal there waiting for you to re-discover.
la Cathédrale Notre-Dame D’Amiens is one such building and was constructed to house the head of St. John the Baptist, which is still on display there. The Amiens Cathedral is the largest in France, and in addition to its size, the cathedral is noted for the sculptures on its exterior façade, and its ornate 3 tiered interior.
So you see, there is a wealth of history for any holidaymaker to see and discover whilst taking mobile home holidays in St Valery-sur-Somme.
