Quimper is a popular and attractive town/city located in the southwest of Brittany in the Départment of Finistere of which it is the capital. The rivet Odet runs through the town and flows out to sea around Benodet, another well known and popular camping and mobile home holiday resort.
For history lovers we can say that there is plenty here and hereabouts to interest you as Quimper dates back to Roman times and perhaps even earlier, but the growth of pottery making in medieval times made the town important and wealthy.
Just a tad to the south of Quimper is the Baie de Kérogan which is naturally a haven for watersports enthusiasts, and it is possible to navigate down the river Odet to the sea if you can hire a boat (if you are capable of making the journey).
The cobbled streets in the old part of the town along the River Odet are perhaps the highlight of a visit there, and they are lined with medieval half-timbered buildings with little bridges crossing the river, and of course, another “must see” is the impressive Saint-Corentin cathedral to the east of old Quimper.
Perhaps the best streets in which to see these medieval houses are the Rue Kéréon, which leads down from the front of the cathedral, and the Place Terre au Duc, but there are plenty of other historic streets in which to meander.
People who come to Quimper for camping and mobile home holidays do so in the knowledge that the town is inland, but the coast is quite nearby to the south where you can visit Benodet, the working fishing port of Concarneau, fouesnant, Beg-Meil and other southern resorts.
Less than 20 KMs to the northwest is Douarnenez at the centre of the Baie de Douarnenez where there are beaches and watersports for all.
