Picardy, as you may well know, is a Department of north eastern France, and it begins roughly 30 KMs north of Paris. Though Picardy has only a relatively small frontage to the English Channel it still boasts vast beachesand dunes overlooked by towering cliffs whilst inland there are lakes, rivers and lots and lots of beautiful space!
Of course, this is the Department of the River Somme, made infamous by the horrendous battles in WW1, and for history buffs there is no shortage of war monuments, memorials and tours of the region's battlefields.
That apart, the region ia an enormous draw for British holidaymakers who like mobile home holidays in the Picardy resorts, St Valery-sur-Somme which is near to the coast not far from Abbeyville, and Guines which is just over the border and really is in the Pas de Calais Department slightly to the north east.
Picardy has never been a warlike Department but it has suffered from being the host to battles in the past, and not only in the last great wars. It was in Picardy when the English army met the French at the Battle of Crécy not far from the Picardy/Pas-de-Calais border on 26th August 1346.
This was one of the most important battles of the Hundred Years' War, though if you should decide to take a mobile home holiday there you may find that the French are still a tad touchy about that battle as they were decimated - don't mention the war!
Without a doubt the best ferry to catch for Picardy is the Dover/Calais or the Channel Tunnel which exits near to the port anyway.
