If I were to have a camping holiday in Lacanau I would almost certainly make it a self drive one and would start from either Caen, Cherbourg or the favourite choice of St Malo. Lacanau sounds so very good as a camping base that it has to be investigated. Bordeaux is relatively close, and you would have to round the Periferique to get there, but once settled in Lacanau it would be easier to take the Bordeaux Park and Ride if you wanted to do some shopping there because parking in French cities can be rather iffy as it is here in the UK.

Lacanau has a good reputation with surfers and the place is alive with them in high season and, as with some of the Vendee beaches they come from many other countries for some of the best surfing in Europe.

If you want to explore on your camping holiday then the there are forests and lakes surrounding Lacanau and there are special hiking trips available to help you further in this. A night walk along the beach after a long lazy day sunbathing sounds a good idea, then back to the camping site for a sit down and a bottle of Bordeaux or which the area is so famous
