Self drive holidays Normandy: If you have a website related to camping and mobile home holidays in Normandy and would like to see it featured here then please email camp@campingmobilehomesholidays.co.uk

The region has played a significant role in history throughout the ages. Conquered by the Romans, who founded the cities of Rouen, Lisieux and Evreux among others, Normandy was invaded by Christian Nordic tribes during the 2nd century and was occupied by them until the Franks came to dominance two centuries later.

As we take our self drive holiday through Normandy it is worth thinking about what happened there in the past. Throughout the ages this region has played a significant role in the history of France from the days when the Romans conquered it and founded Rouen and other major cities, through to the invasion of Christian Nordic tribes, the dominance of the Franks, and we must never forget the battles of the 2nd World War which took place on and near to the Normandy beaches which attract so many visitors each year where so many valiant soldiers and sailors lost their lives.

Nor can we forget as we drive round Normandy the Bayeux Tapestry which is now on permanent display in the Normandy city of Bayeux (where else?), and though it has always been called a tapestry it is in fact an huge embriodery, and which tells of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 including the preparations and the reasons for William the Conqueror invading England. It is extremely interesting and well worth a visit.

One advantage of taking a self drive holiday in Normandy is it's close proximity to England which means that people who live in the north of England can easily make the journey in one day without having to overnight anywhere and add to the holiday cost. This part of France is obviously not generally as hot as other areas further South, but it is surprising how many holidaymakers actually prefer a cooler climate rather than the (normally in Summer) incessant heat of the Vendee and the more Southerly climes.
