The Limousin is one of the most unspoilt regions of France both for living and for holidays

The Limousin Department is located in southern central France, and comprises of three regions: Haute-

Vienne, Creuse and Correze. It is one of the most rural regions in the country and is perfect for those looking for peace, tranquillity and remote, unspoiled landscapes.

It has green wooded hills on which there are old churches, castles and charming villages. Watersports lovers - that is canoeists as opposed to surfers this time - will be in their element as there are deep gorges, numerous rivers and masses and masses of lakes. It's a great area for fishing, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. The only really large town is Limoges, a pleasant place which has been famed for its pottery for many, many years.

At the moment property and living costs are a lot cheaper than neighbouring regions and this sparsely populated region is largely undiscovered by foreigners (apart from the Brits of course). Limoges is located next to the Dordogne, and is becoming more and more popular with British second homebuyers and settlers due to cheap property prices. But right now you are looking for information about holidays in Limousin.

But first you need to know how to get there if you are doing the self drive thing that is, and to be fair there are more ways than one in this case so you have a choice of ferry ports to use from Caen in the north west to Le Havre, Dieppe, the Chunnel to the busiest which is Calais.

Getting to the Limousin is relatively painless, and from the main ports of Calais, Dieppe and Sangatte where the Tunnel disgorges, it makes excellent sense to head for Rouen, past Evreux and Dreux to Chartres. This route bypasses Paris as getting lost in that lovely city would be a disastrous start to your holidays.

From Chartres head south to Orleans, past Vierzon, Chateauroux and Argenton sur Creuse. Your next stop is Limoges in the Limousin where your holidays begin.
