If your family includes a wife and daughter like ours then you will appreciate the need for a very large car which they will undoubtedly fill with feminine "junk" and which will neither be used or worn during the course of your self drive holiday through France, Spain, Germany or wherever. If your family consists of more than one daughter then I'm afraid you're stuffed mate: just accept your fishing rod and tackle or surfboard are not going with you on this trip.

As a family we have nearly always taken self drive holidays because in the old days I was unable to afford to fly us off somewhere more exotic than our neighbouring country over the water, but thankfully they all loved France which is my favourite holiday destination as soon as we arrived and they all wanted to go back in following years. A holiday of this sort can also be extremely educational for the younger members of the family, especially if you have planned the route beforehand and given them some literature to read about places you will be passing and/or visiting.

In 2009 we have to think about holidays logically and in doing so make sure that we get the best value for money possible, and that is precisely where self drive holidays come into their own as they represent possibly the best value to be had in family holidays in my view, but of course that all depends on the accommodation you have chosen when you arrive. Many self drive holidays are spent either camping or in mobile homes. Either represent a significant saving over staying in holtels or renting gites which whilst they may be nice are usually more expensive, and can be very expensive depending on the size and the location of the property. Not only is a mobile home holiday inexpensive I'm 100% certain that you will approve of the level of comfort provided, and as you can get various sizes from the tour operators they will suit families both large and small.
