Yurt camping in France: If you have a site relating to this topic and you would like to see it featured here then please email camp@campingmobilehomesholidays.co.uk

If you have read some of our other Yurt holiday pages then you know more or less how they are constructed, and that Yurt camping holidays are what some people call Glamping, short for glamorous camping, and they're right! Yurts are so comfortable with their raised floors and proper beds that you actually forget that you are in what is essentially a tent. Add France into the equation and that makes for a perfect holiday, because for me there is nowhere that quite matches France for camping.

Yurts are most certainly the most luxurious form of camping to date, though Pods are pretty good too, but there is something about a Yurt which attracts you like a magnet as soon as you set eyes on it. Comfort apart, they are also one of the most Eco friendly types of accommodation too as they should be made out of local sustainably materials. If you are cold, and you shouldn't be cold during a French summer, there is a centrally located log burner to keep you warm. Fridges and cookers bring the whole thing up to spec to make Yurt camping an enjoyable experience whether in France or anywhere else.

Depending on your outlook the French have been the market leaders in the camping stakes since before I started taking holidays there in the early 1960's. One could say that camping holidays were a lifestyle as opposed to the farcical sites which were on offer here at the same time 40 odd years ago. Camping in France in those days included taking your own equipment as there were no tents for hire at all, but even then the shower blocks and shops were all pristine clean, which is totally different to the disgusting conditions which holidaymakers had to put up with here at the same time.

In those days of course Yurts had yet to be invented for use in the leisure/holiday/camping industry, despite being used 1000 years ago or more by the Mongol hordes etc. Did Attila take his holidays in a Yurt one wonders? I don't think that he and his mob reached France or he could have been known as the forerunner of Yurt camping holidays there.

Oddly enough then, it is the British who have taken the lead in providing Yurt camping sites and holidays – there are probably more Yurt camping sites in the Lake District than in the whole of France – but the French are catching on quickly. Having said that, all the yurt camp owners in France with whom I have communicated are all Brits, but at least they are based in France, lucky dogs!
