Camping holidays in England - camping holidays in England, as opposed to Scotland, Ireland and Wales which are covered on other pages. If you have a site relating to this topic and you would like to see it featured here then please email camp@campingmobilehomesholidays.co.uk
I was sat in a bar somewhere in Spain a while ago, down to my last few Euros and thinking of England, as you do when the rain is bouncing 6 inches off the floor outside, and when you get a good storm in Spain it fairly hisses down. I wasn't short of money per se but my wife had taken off on a shopping trip and with someone we had recently met and with her went nearly all the money, leaving me with just a handful of shrapnel for drinkies. She is ever thoughtful like that. Anyway, because I don't speak any Spanish and the barman was a Geordie who I was unable to understand (joke, sorry Geordie!), my mind drifted to all the camping holidays we had taken in the past. Though we had enjoyed nearly all of them the chief amongst these were our camping trips in England.
The time of writing is mid February 2009 and we have snow on the ground here in middle England, snow in the South and snow in the North too. Minds like mine are thinking about warmer weather, about holidays and camping in particular, for we as a nation tend to be well into camping holidays but the odds are that because of the Global financial crisis and especially because of the virtual parity between the £ Pound Sterling and the Euro that many of us will opt for a camping holiday at home in England this year instead of tasting the delights of France and Spain as we normally do.
We haven't quite decided where to go yet and much as we love camping in France we believe that it is going to be a seriously expensive time to go there for a couple of weeks unless one tightens the belt until it hurts that is, and doing that can spoil a holiday because it is normally a time when we make a point of doing and buying things which we wouldn't normally pay good money for.
So, camping somewhere in little old England it is for most of us then: but where are we going to go and what sort of camping are we looking for?
The where is up to you but there are several sorts of camping you may not have delved into yet such as mobile home or chalet camping - you all know what these are so they need no further explanation here. Other that those there are the camping holidays where you hire not only the tent but also virtually everything you need to have a good holiday, for instance, your tent would come equipped with a cooker and all utensils, a fridge with freezer compartment, and beds. Don't forget the beds, though you may have to check with your tour operator as to whether the bedding is included or not.
Now then, you may or may not have heard of the term "Glamping" but this refers to Glamorous Camping in Yurts and England is well set up with campsites offering Yurt holidays. For those not sure about Yurts let me briefly explain: Yurts are what the Mongols used to live in hundreds and hundreds of years ago, and which suited their nomadic lifestyle because they could be packed up and re-assembled in no time at all. Yurt camping has recently caught on again, especially in England and the Yurts used are always top of the range for warmth and comfort - in fact they are so well insulated you could easily live in one all year round if you have a log burner inside (most have these for holiday use anyway). Yurts have proper beds, Yurts have cookers, fridges and more often than not they have proper carpets too. They have carpets because they have raised floors to keep out the damp and make the whole thing more comfy. As aforesaid, Yurt camping is top of the range so expect to pay a little more for your camping holiday to reflect that.
Then we come to Tipis or Teepes which are similar to those used by the old Native American Indians and again, like the Yurts these have been resurrected for the camping and holiday business and good old England has plenty of Tipi camping sites dotted about the countryside too.
An interesting fact is that while the French refined camping holidays many years ago and turned camping into an art form as opposed to some of the dreadful sites which were on offer here in England at the same time, they are noticeably slower on the uptake when it comes to Yurt and Tipi camping. Strange but true and nice to know that we are at least ahead of the Eurozone in at least one aspect of the holiday business.
