Self drive holidays in the Costa Brava area of Spain: If you have a site with a topic relating to this page and you would like to see it featured here then please email camp@campingmobilehomesholidays.co.uk
As I write this the snow is falling and drip, drip, dripping onto the windowsill outside. It is miserable here in the middle of England and my thoughts lie much further away where the winters are not only more mild but much shorter too. Yes, I am planning our self drive holidays into the Costa Brava area of Spain for June and part of July 2009. Believe me when I say that it can't come soon enough, and I can guarantee this has set you thinking about your own holidays too.
The Costa Brava starts as soon as you pass into Spain from France, having gone past Perpignan first, and is already much visited by Brits in the Summer time, but how many actually drive there? How many take the opportunity which a self drive holiday in Spain offers? The freedom of travelling when you wish, where you wish and the ability to cram the car with utterly useless bits and pieces which you will never wear or use in the next two weeks but which make you feel better knowning that you have them with you is something that is not on offer if you fly there, or even if you flydrive.
If you go far enough into the Costa Brava then the main towns/cities are Gerona (Girona), Barcelona and Tarragona at the Southern end, but it is odds on that whilst you may very well visit and see the delights of Barcelona and all it has to offer you will spend most of your time on or near to a beach, of which the Costa Brava has a plethora (or a very lot of, whichever).
No, self drive holidays are enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of people every year and in the main they are enjoyed to the full, just as we have enjoyed ours in various parts of France in the past.
We intend, as most other self drive people intend, to take the Dover to Calais ferry and flog down the A26 Autoroute, taking care to adhere to the speed limit of course. We should change direction at Orange which is just a tad North of Avignon, bypass Montpellier and Narbonne on the A9, entering Spain and the Costa Brava soon after passing Perpignan.
Now we are getting that bit older we don't spend as much time on the beach as we did when taking the family on holiday, but nevertheless we do love to sunbathe and take walks on the beach looking for unusual stones and shells, none of which ever make it back to England for some reason. I don't mind admitting that when our family was young the only holidays I could afford to take them on was when we went self catering and self drive with a tent packed in the car. Things are somewhat different now and we are sure that the Costa Brava will meet all our expectations.
For the information of all self drive holiday makers going to France and Spain this year please have a look at our page about European driving laws as a new and important one was brought out in July 2008 which could catch out drivers going through to or through those two countries. We also have a tongue in cheek page about good holiday tips and a good holiday guide which may or may not be useful to you.
