OK, we have been pressed into writing a page for cheap campsites, but have you ever stumbled across a dear one? Some may cost a tad more than others for a night but usually that's for a good reason - the site has masses of facilities which naturally have to be paid for somehow, or it is a site for luxury camping or it is very near to some major attraction or whatever. It is unlikely to break the bank if you stay there, but really that is part of what camping is all about.

Many years ago we found that camping is a great leveller in that it matters not who you are, what your job is or how much money you have. On a campsite everyone is equal to each other. Everyone mixes and talks to each other, we help each other, lifelong ties of friendship are made, and it all makes for great holidays where you can sometimes meet the same people again and again. The common denominator we found was that all campsites are cheap.

But: When we talk of campsites we mean the proper ones, not those which have been filled with cattle or sheep the day before the season starts as we believe they should not be allowed to continue in business as they do at present.

When you go camping in France it is rare these days to find a campsite which is totally given over to tent camping, indeed, most sites are filled with the more luxurious mobile homes, and there is kore than one reason for this. One reason is that by having tour operators (in this instance companies which hire out mobile homes for holidays) the site owner is guaranteed to have a certain income which he will be able to calculate a year or so in advance. This means that he/she is able to budget better and provide a steady programme of investment into repairs and new facilities.

It means that if there is a bad summer weather wise the site owner is still guaranteed an income, or if there is a downturn in the economy as at present, then the site owner still makes a living but he or she is still able to offer cheap tent camping as the mobiles rarely take up all the pitches. So there you have it in a nutshell; all campsites are cheap.
