Mobile home holidays les Sables d'Olonne, Vendee, western France
Les Sables d'Olonne is a purpose built seaside resort and the capital of the Cote de la Lumiere or Coast of light. It has a long sandy beach and is regarded as a fun holiday resort with masses of camping and mobile home sites around it.
Obviously les Sables is situated on the coast and it is roughly 16 KMs south of Brem-sur-Mer, but in between les Sables and Brem there is 10 KMs of woodland called Foret d'Olonne and this is a great example of woodland and ancient protected dunes which is home to so many species of bird and animal life such as the red squirrel in the photo.
Les Sables is an ideal town for mobile home holidays and the town itself has everything anyone could want. There are masses of shops here, great restaurants and some night life, but as in most French resort towns outside coastal Provence the nightlife is sparse because most people taking the sort of holiday on offer are seeking something more laid back and sedate.
The beach at Les Sables d'Olonne is called Le Grande Plage and it is one of the safest in the Vendee. It is a long crescent of gently shelving sand which is protected to the north by the harbour wall on the Les Sables side and by the breakwater that stretches out from the Fort de Saint Nicolas.
During your camping or mobile home holiday here you may at some stage wish to tear yourself away from your sunbed on the beach and do a little exploring, so we can tell you that there is a nationally acclaimed Zoo on the southern outskirts of the town. We have visited this Zoo several times and can tell you that parrots and other exquisite birds are free to fly here, and tiny monkeys will hassle you for food and drink in the restaurant area.
Whilst we don't agree with caged animals per se, this quite small Zoo is so highly regarded as a research facility into endangered species that it is a joy to visit.
Further afield to the south is the resort of la Tranche and this is one of the last major camping and mobile home holiday resorts in the départment. It is certainly worth a visit and we will be making a page especially for that resort in the near future.
