Camping and mobile home holidays in Brittany.
A great many Brits have settled and bought property in Brittany, and a vast amount more go camping there to take holidays in the exceptionally well run sites which are dotted all about. Brittany has a lot of history too. There are the standing stones or megalithic alignments near Carnac for a start, which were erected several thousands of years ago - it is thought that they were put there between 2,000 and 5,000 years ago - and are well worth a visit either to view from the roadside or via a guided tour which takes you right beside them.
Getting to Brittany is easy peasy for Brits if you are prepared to spend just a little more on your holiday than the basic ferry crossing of Dover/Calais you will be given when you buy it. Without a doubt the best bet is to take one of the ferries to St Malo and drive to your camping site from there and this Brittany map shows just how easily that route will take you to your destination. OK, it costs a tad more in outlay but at the same time the Poole/St Malo route saves you hours and hours of driving and a tankful of fuel - diesel is cheaper in France than it is here but petrol is about the same. All in all we believe that the extra expense is well worth while for any camping holiday in Brittany. You will have to work out the figures for yourselves: does spending more on the ferry crossing and arriving at your resort feeling reasonably fresh sound better than 5 hours extra driving from Calais and a tankful of gas?
So where are the best places for camping holidays in Brittany? That depends on your taste but there are literally hundreds of sites starting at the Northern coast. Turn right at St Malo and follow the coast around Finisterre and down the Southern Brittany coast where camping is probably at it's most popular from Quimper down to Pornic. And of course there are masses of campsites inland too.
But camping in Brittany can be a delight and may suit younger children better than some of the hotter places in France. Our experience is that shopping is a tad more expensive in Brittany than in the Vendee for instance, but when you're on holiday 1 or 2 percent doesn't break the bank anyway.
One plus which Brittany and the Vendee share is that we, at least, haven't yet come across any British Yobbos - is it only a matter of time? A delight yet to be savoured?
We certainly hope that you enjoy your time in Brittany whether you opt for staying in a mobile home or for a tent camping holiday, and we have cobbled together a few pages which may be useful to you now that the UK is in recession, starting with a page about holiday savings, our page on camping etiquette and lastly our good holiday guide, and if you are on a self drive holiday as most people who take camping holidays in brittany are then you may find our page about continental driving laws useful too. Driving laws are constantly added to or amended and it is as well to keep on the right side of the French police who are never the most joyful souls in the world.
